Charleston, SC

Several photo's are the outside of the ships that you can tour at Patriots Point.  Other photo's are some of the ships that we encountered on our ferry ride over and back to historical Fort Sumter.  We had a great time with our friends Jerry and Laura Smith.  If you're in the Charleston area, you'll want to take a whole day to tour the ships at Patriots point and then block off half a day to tour Fort Sumter.  It's all well-worth checking out!

Air Craft Carrier - The Yorktown

Planes and Choppers on the Yorktown

They launch fireworks off the front of the Yorktown on 4th of July. It's beautiful!

Besides touring the Yorktown you can also tour a Submarine, Coast Guard Cutter, and a Destroyer.

Fort Sumter is in the distance.

Naval ship...we can catch it!

Bird buzzing the water looking for fish to catch.

Fort Sumter from the ferry.

Lightohouse in the distance.

Getting closer to Fort Sumter!

....and closer....

This is where we just came from.

View to the South West of Fort Sumter. We weren't sure what the bright reflecting building is, but it was pretty neat.

We finally arrived at Fort Sumter!

Jay's looking mischievious!

They told us we couldn't play "ON" the cannons, they didn't say anything about shooting Laura...

Or climbing inside. Jerry, are you lighting that?

Baby cannon compared to those others!

Actual round lodged inside this wall.

This is what the inside of the cannon barrel looked like.

We're trying to figure out how this all worked and Jerry's looking to see where that bar attaches.

...and this is where it attached.

More views of the cannon

Can you imagine the deafning noise and echoes of these things???

Hi Laura.

Jay's looking this one over, but Jerry must've set it up because it's aimed the wrong way!

Sign explaining about the cannons.

Lined up and ready for action.

View from the top looking South East (I think)

View from the top looking North East (I think). The guide said the Hunley sunk about 4 miles off the point.

Flags frying above the Fort.

Closer look at some of the flags.

Looks like maybe a naval weather station?

Ship way off in the distance headed for Charleston.

Sign about the H.L. Hunley.

Sign about controlling the harbor.

As soon as Laura disappeared a school of about 10 dolphins showed up.

Jerry & Laura pose for a picture.

You can see the Yorktown and the marina in this picture.

Here comes the big container ship that was way off in the distance when we were looking at the dolphins.

Jerry is afraid we're going to try and cut in front of the big ship

Yorktown again.

To Jerry's relief, we waited on the big ship.

It continues to make it's way down to port.

There's the Coast Guard Cutter you can tour with the Destroyer on the other side of it.

Awesome looking aircraft on the Yorktown

More pictures of the Yorktown from our ferry.

You can see the Coast Guard ship and Destroyer in this one too.

More views of the ships.

Look at the size of the anchor!

Good thing this one isn't moving! I love this view though!
